French fries have been associated with a higher risk of death. How high? Well, a recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reports regular consumption of fries can double your risk of death.
Those who eat fried potatoes (french fries, potato chips, hash browns, etc.) more than twice per week may be more likely to die early compared with adults who eat fried potatoes less often.
Don't get it twisted. Potatoes in their natural state are very low in fat and sodium. The starchy vegetable is packed with fiber, vitamin C and many other nutrients. In fact, a potato has more potassium than a banana!
Potatoes can make a great addition to any healthful diet, but hot grease is where the trouble starts. Deep frying foods in oil adds more calories, which can contribute to undesired weight gain. Regular consumption of these oils can also boost risk for high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Who has the time?
...But before we swear off French fries forever, it is important to note that this observational study does have limitations. People who eat a lot of fried potatoes might have other unhealthy lifestyle practices that the results do not reflect. For instance, (apart from fries) what other foods are being consumed? Is the person less likely to exercise? Do they have a family history of chronic disease? Each of these factors can impact the results!
An occasional fried potato splurge won't make you drop dead, but having fried foods regularly can increase your risk for cardiovascular disease, hypertension, obesity and many other health problems.
